Tax says: 16 July 2020 at 12:39 I received an auto-assessment from SARS. My husband did not receive the SMS but my friend also received an SMS saying she has been auto-assessed. Why have SARS introduced this new process? Why are there some being auto-assessed and not others? |
TaxTim says: 16 July 2020 at 12:41 The auto-assessment process was started in 2019 however, it has been expanded on this year in response to the Covid-19 pandemic and the need for physical distancing. It is intended to remove the need for taxpayers to travel to branches to file tax returns there. If you have been selected for auto-assessment, this means that you are in the sample of taxpayers that will receive an automatically generated assessment from SARS. You have most likely been selected because it appears from prior years that you have a relatively simple tax return (no extra income or complicated deductions) and all 3rd party data providers have submitted your certificates to SARS on your behalf. However, please read our blog to ensure you are aware of the risks involved with accepting your auto-assessment. |
