What does SARS mean by auto-assessment?

I saw something in a news article about SARS issuing auto-assessments this year from 1 August. I tried to research but couldn't find much and this is all very new to me. Please can you explain what this is? Are there any new changes which I need to be aware moving forward? I have been filing my own tax return for the past years, but I hear that I might not need to do so this year.

This is an automatic assessment issued by SARS to certain taxpayers. SARS generates this assessment by using data collected from employers, financial institutions, medical schemes, retirement annuity fund administrators and other 3rd parties. In other words, SARS assesses certain taxpayers automatically based on all available data that they have collected about them.

It is important to note that this assessment is generated without any input from the taxpayer at all. For more details, please read our
FAQ on auto-assessments .
