It generally means that SARS is auditing for previous years and may have imposed penalties for non-submission.

Thank you so much. Why would they do such a thing? What if all previous years were submitted but they were not audited? Why would they audit previous years?

SARS can open up old cases, the best thing to do is have your friend phone 0800 00 7277 and find out what the cause is.
