Tax credit for medical expenses?

I have a question about the SARS rebate for out-of-pocket medical expenses: According to your blog post (https://www. Taxtim. Com/za/blog/medical-aid-tax-2014-how-sars-new-changes-affect-you), medical expenses only qualify for rebate IF medical aid contributions are greater than 4x the fixed tax credit. (Assuming the taxpayer is under 65 and not disabled. ) However, on the SARS website (http://www. Sars. Gov. Za/TaxTypes/PIT/Pages/Additional-Medical-Expenses-Tax-Credit. Aspx), under Examples 2 and 3 at the bottom of the page, medical expenses are calculated and credited independent of excess medical aid contributions (and despite the fact that the "excess" is less than 3x and 4x the fixed credit respectively). Which is correct?

Our blog refers to the excess credits, non medical aid expenditure, so that's the out of pocket qualifying medical expenditure will also qualify if the amount is greater than 7.5% of your taxable income then the excess will be allowed as a credit. You can make use of our Medical Tax Credits Calculator and work out what your possible credit may be.
