Provisional tax payer. Over 75. No med aid. What can I claim for medical expenses?

Only "qualifying medical expenditure" can be claimed. That is to say anything which was specifically prescribed by a doctor or similar health care professional. This would include visits to the Doctor. However it would not include over the counter medicines bought from the pharmacy.

Thank you.Now I know.
So, what do people do about an impairment (after a procedure), where you need to buy things off the shelve of the chemist eg Tena? No help from SARS?

If you have a disability/impairment as defined by SARS (see below), you need to register with SARS by completing the DDR form (on their website) and then you will be eligible to claim additional medical credits when you complete your tax return.

Definition of Disability / Impairment:

You are unable to perform certain functions in your daily life and this has been confirmed by a doctor. This means a moderate to severe limitation of a person's ability to function or perform daily activities as a result of a physical, sensory, communication, intellectual or mental impairment, if the limitation -

has lasted or has a prognosis of lasting more than a year; and
is diagnosed by a duly registered medical practitioner in accordance with criteria prescribed by the Commissioner.
