Mrs. Husband says: 29 June 2015 at 11:50 Hi there, My husband is disabled and I do not have medical aid but I pay for his chronic medication and doctors visits out of my pocket for the year. This amounts to between R 25 - R 35,000 p/year. Am I able to claim anything back against this medical expenses? Under code 4020 perhaps? My annual income is between R 180000 - R 200000 p/ year. (7. 5% = - R 13,5 - R15000) - Can I claim the difference in expenses without being on medical aid? Thank you for your assistance in this regard. |
TaxTim says: 29 June 2015 at 14:13 Have you submitted an ITR-DD to SARS regarding your husband's disability? What is his age? |
Mrs. Husband says: 29 June 2015 at 16:49 No I have not submitted an ITR-DD to SARS. Not even sure what that is. Every year I have had medical aid so I only use to claim for out of medical aid expenses and marked that I have a disabled member on my tax return but no more than that. My husband is 46. |
TaxTim says: 29 June 2015 at 22:03 Given your husband's disability you are actually entitled to claim all his medical expenses and receive special deductions or tax credits because of this. I would suggest downloading the form from the SARS website (see this link) and having your doctor complete it and then giving it to SARS. Have your doctor complete it from the date when your husband became disabled and then for subsequent years. You can then reopen your returns and perhaps get some money back. What is the nature of your husband's disability? We want to check it is on the SARS approved list. |
Mrs. Husband says: 1 July 2015 at 14:22 That is really interesting to know. He was diagnosed 7 years ago with Chronic Temporal Lobe Epilepsy (TLE) and this had rendered him unable to work - certified medically. |
TaxTim says: 1 July 2015 at 17:52 This will qualify as a disability so we suggest you have your doctor complete the ITR-DD form and submit to SARS. |
