Mad003 says: 7 July 2015 at 9:58 I need to please find out - I am on my fiancé's medical aid (he is the main member), should there be any excess to be paid on medication etc. We do not physically pay the cash but it is taken from his salary at the end of the month. The medical aid did send us a detailed certificate on each beneficiary - my question is now - Is he as the main member responsible to claim for all the beneficiaries as the excess was deducted from his salary?? Second question - I went to see a ear specialist where I had to pay the consultation fee out of my own pocket (Medical aid did not cover consultation) can I claim that money on my Tax certificate or should it be claimed on the main member of my medical aid's tax certificate? |
TaxTim says: 7 July 2015 at 10:20 Your fiance will claim the number of members on the certificate under his tax return. If this amount gets paid via his employer then there should not be any refund due. You can claim the costs of the specialist on your return as this was your cost. |
Mad003 says: 7 July 2015 at 10:31 Thanks so much for the quick response :) I did speak to one of the consultants at SARS and according to them the main member of the medical aid is the one to claim the excess paid - even if it was paid directly from me and the invoice is made out on my name - I am a little confused now. according to me I should, like you stated above be able to claim it on my tax certificate as I was the one that paid the money. Lastly, should I claim the amount paid to the specialist, will the invoice from an invoice book stamped by the Specialist be sufficient? |
TaxTim says: 7 July 2015 at 11:06 The excess, does it appear on the medical aid certificate as claims not paid for by medical aid? |
Mad003 says: 7 July 2015 at 12:12 Nope it does not. On the medical aid certificate it does show that I saw the specialist and that there was a R57.52 contribution to be made by the member - the R57.52 was deducted from my fiancés salary, additional to that there was a consultation fee of R300 (Not reflecting on the medical aid certificate) - I hope this makes sense... |
TaxTim says: 7 July 2015 at 12:26 Ok that is why the SARS consultant said he must claim, if it appears on his medical certificate then SARS will only accept his submission of this. |
