Tammy says: 7 July 2015 at 8:29 Hi there TaxTim I religiously file my tax returns every year and made a horrid mistake this year. I was due a refund from my 2015 tax return (did the return on 01/07/2015) and haven't received it as yet. After calling their call centre, I was told to complete my 2011 tax return. I did this and checked my 2010 and 2009 to ensure all information was correct, accurate and submitted. (I was thinking, chances are, they would tell me to submit 2010 and 2009 to process my refund after submitting 2011. ) However, on my 2009 tax return, the information on the efiling system was completely blank. Thinking I didn't need to do a tax return (as I was studying full time in 2009 and working part-time), I submitted it. The efiling system then asked me for supporting documents. I couldn't understand what they meant or wanted so I requested a change and clicked "unemployed" and submitted version two. Now I see I am up for audit. I contacted the call centre again (and became quite a stalker), and was advised to add my IRP5 for 2009 onto the first original version under "Supporting Documents", however I am not sure if the employer will still have it on record, as it was six years ago. Please advise as to what steps I need to take, to get everything back in order. Your site is extremely informative and I hope you continue to provide us with awesome tax advice. |
TaxTim says: 7 July 2015 at 8:41 Firstly, nothing to worry about - everything is fixable. Contact your old employer and find out if they can provide you with the IRP5 and let's start there. |
Tammy says: 7 July 2015 at 10:05 Thanks TaxTim :) I will do so as soon as possible. |
Tammy says: 7 July 2015 at 10:27 Hi there I've received my IRP5 from my previous employer. Please advise regarding the next step. |
TaxTim says: 7 July 2015 at 11:14 Now you just have to upload it - was the information on the 2009 return you submitted the same as what is on your IRP5? |
Tammy says: 7 July 2015 at 11:22 The 2009 return was completely blank on e-filing, that's why I simply submitted it, thinking I didn't need to fill in anything and didn't qualify for tax. However, I see on my IRP5 form that it says at the bottom, "Earnings less than tax thrshld". It was a part-time job, as I was studying full time. |
TaxTim says: 7 July 2015 at 11:24 You can submit this IRP5 then and SARS will make the necessary adjustment. After they have done so then your refund for the current year will be paid out. |
Tammy says: 7 July 2015 at 11:27 Thank you TaxTim I wish I knew about you guys years ago. This website (and awesome idea) is truly incredible. Keep you the good work and thank you again. |
TaxTim says: 7 July 2015 at 11:30 Thank you for the words! Glad we could assist! |
Tammy says: 20 July 2015 at 11:20 Hi there TaxTim I just received a "Notice of Assessment"/"Additional Assessment" letter for the 2009 tax year. It states I didn't qualify to pay tax as I was under the tax threshold (I knew this all along). There is also a section that says, "Selected for audit or verification" with a "N" next to it. Does this mean that my refund will be processed as they have completed my tax return manually? Or is this only stage one of the process? |
TaxTim says: 20 July 2015 at 21:47 It should be, unless SARS decide to perform a full audit which is unlikely, you should receive your refund in a few days. |
Tammy says: 23 July 2015 at 14:05 Hi TaxTim Thanks for all your help, I received my refund today from SARS. |
TaxTim says: 23 July 2015 at 20:58 Fantastic! |
