How does tax work for freelancers and part time workers?

I am a freelance photographer, part time lecturer at two colleges and I facilitate some photography short courses. How do I pay tax? What tax do I pay?

Are you registered for a tax number?

Thanks for the response.

No I am not at the moment. What tax do I register for? Provisional tax or do I register a company and register a tax number for a company?

You need to register for a tax number which you can do by following the instructions on the link below:

Get a Tax Number

This will give you a SARS tax number which you will then be able to register for both provisional and year end tax. You will complete a provisional IRP6 and a year end ITR12. When being paid by your clients you will give them this tax number once SARS has issued you with it.

Thanks again for your response, I think we are getting there :)

With the IT77, page 2 asks about my employer details. You see I don't have one. I work contractually, I freelance. I run courses sometimes and photograph weddings and events etc. So I cannot fill in my employer details,

Page 3 ask around my income details and I cannot (even as an estimate) fill in my income details. One month a may have three weddings to shoot and for three months I may have none. It is sporadic.

Any suggestions?

Thanks again Tim, this has been brilliant so far.

If you don't have an employer you can leave that out. Also the income it is asking for is estimated so it does not need to be accurate, you can extrapolate the first month for the remainder of the year.

Thanks for the compliments on our service:)
