How do I get a SARS tax number?

Hi I would like to know how can I get my tax number online and how much dose it cost for getting a tax number online. I sow on TaxTim that I need to pay R149 or R50 after I have registated with TaxTim, so what's that money for and why so much? if I can't pay what's going to happen?

Unfortunately you cannot get your tax number online, you will have to drop documents at SARS - Get a SARS Tax Number we do not charge for this service.

We only charge for completing a tax return. If you pay upfront you get a voucher code which you will use for 'payment' at the end of the process.
