Sailor says: 24 August 2015 at 23:35 I am working for a UK company in the offshore outside South Africa. I work 6 weeks away then 6 weeks in South Africa. I usually stay out of South Africa for more than 183 days but not 6o days consecutive. Being an offshore worker, am I still liable for paying taxes in South Africa? |
TaxTim says: 25 August 2015 at 16:19 What do you do for that company? |
Sailor says: 25 August 2015 at 16:29 I am a navigating officer |
TaxTim says: 25 August 2015 at 16:33 Would this activity apply to you: in the international transportation for reward of passengers or goods; or (bb) in the prospecting exploration or mining (including surveys and other work of a similar nature) for any minerals (including natural oils) from the seabed outside the Republic, where such officer or crew member is employed on board such ship solely for the purposes of the 'passage' of such ship If so then your income is exempt from tax in SA. |
Sailor says: 25 August 2015 at 16:37 Yes that should apply to me but how do I prove that to SARS |
TaxTim says: 28 August 2015 at 10:39 If SARS requests documents then you would submit a contact of your employment and passport copies. If you declare this income you would include it under the "amounts not considered taxable" section of the tax return. |
