I received the following confirmation letter, what does it mean? Will I receive my refund within the next few days or what?

Dear Taxpayer

VERIFICATION OF ASSESSMENT

We refer to the verification of your assessment for the 2021 tax period. Please note that no adjustment has been made to this assessment. However, in terms of the Tax Administration Act the South African Revenue Service reserves the right to conduct further reviews in future if required. Should you have any queries please call the SARS Contact Centre on 0800 00 SARS (7277). Remember to have your ID number or income tax number at hand when you call to enable us to assist you promptly. Sincerely

This means that the result of your previous assessment stands and you should be paid out a refund in the next 7 business days if a refund was due to you. If you do not receive the payment by then (7 working days) please contact SARS on 0800 00 7277 to find out why the payment was not made. There are a couple of reasons SARS might have reversed the refund on your SARS account (Please see your statement of account to confirm) • The auditing department might want to check your return again

Usually, SARS' system automatically restarts a verification process on your tax return if one or more of your claims weren't explained in detail. This means, a whole new verification case will be created and SARS will ask you for the same documents you'd sent them before and you might have to wait another 60 days to get your refund.

• Special stopper

Accidently paid SARS money you didn't owe them? Any refund due to you will be held back by them. You'll have to go into a SARS branch with your proof of payment made, an explanation of why you paid them and your ID so that SARS can unfreeze your tax account. This could take SARS approximately 21 working days to resolve.

• Uncertainty regarding your banking details

SARS' internal system periodically checks if your banking details are correct. Should they find any discrepancies, you'll have to make an online booking with SARS to confirm your banking details. You'd need to provide a certified ID copy, the latest proof of address, a three-month bank statement and a photo of you holding your ID.
