Claiming health insurance when not being the main member

Hi, I am health insured as a dependent with my husband, who is the main member. Can I claim any of the expenses for health insurance with SARS even though I am not the main member? And if yes, how much would that be? (The health insurance only gives the lumpsum for all insured members in their tax certificate). Thanks!

Since your husband is the main member, he should claim the medical credit on his tax return for himself and you. Assuming you both earn income and submit a Tax Return, the tax benefit would be the same regardless of which one of you claims it.

But it makes more sense for him to do so since the Medical Aid is in his name and therefore would be easy to verify to SARS should they request supporting documents.
