Claiming back tax on a bonus you had to pay back to a company

How do I claim back tax on a retention bonus I received from my previous company. I was advised to fill it in under the section that states "Amounts Refunded i. T. O. Section 11(nA) and 11(nB)" and code 4042. What evidence will SARS need. I called their call centre but they were of no help.

Did you pay back the retention bonus, can the company send you proof of this? Please Register for TaxTim and let us assist you in completing the tax return correctly including the tax deduction for this amount paid back.

Hi, yes I did pay back the retention bonus. I only have the proof of payment from my bank that I transferred the money to the company. They did not send me a receipt.

I already submitted my tax return and now SARS wan't proof but they can't tell me what I need to submit to them.

You need to get a letter from the company stating you paid it back and submit that along with proof of payment.
