Unsure says: 28 August 2015 at 13:30 I pay for my own medical aid for myself and 3 dependants. I also pay for my pensioner mum and disabled brothers medical aid. I put them onto a separate medical aid as it will cost me too much if I had to add them as dependents on mine. I got my mum as the principal member and my brother as the dependant on that medical aid. Can I claim for this under medical aid / medical expenses? I did call SARS helpline but was told I cannot as they are not dependants under my medical aid. I did tell them that the premiums are debited from my bank account every month and they live with me. Unsure on what to make of it. Please help |

Unsure says: 31 August 2015 at 9:19 Yes they are. They live with me and their only income is - Mum who gets an old age state pension and brother who collects a state disability grant. Both dont work and financially dependant on me. If they are totally financially dependant on me would I be right in assuming that I can claim for their medical aid? Thanks in advance for your reply and also for the helpful website which im sure helps alot of people. |
TaxTim says: 3 September 2015 at 11:41 You can claim for this, if SARS does ask for proof, you would need to provide some letter and maybe other evidence of them being completely and financially dependent on you. Happy to be here to assist! |
