TaxTim says: 26 April 2024 at 14:56 Anyone who earns an income in South Africa, regardless of their industry or occupation, can complete and submit an annual individual tax return, ITR12 to the South African Revenue Service (SARS). If you earn below the annual tax threshold (currently R95 750 per year) however, you are not required by law to submit a tax return. If you earn above this amount per year, then you should submit a tax return (ITR12) to SARS. Click here to find out more. However, whether or not you receive a refund depends on various factors, such as your income, and tax-deductible expenses. Tax refunds arise only when too much tax was paid by the taxpayer because either SARS or the employer was unaware of certain deductions, such as medical aid or retirement annuity fund contributions when the monthly Pay-As-You-Earn (PAYE) was calculated and paid over to SARS or if their employer didn't accurately calculate their monthly PAYE. When tax season comes around and taxpayers complete their ITR12 income tax returns with all their information and the assessment results in an overpayment of tax, then a refund becomes due. We recommend reading our blog for more information here and also check out SARS Refund Calculator to see if you will be due a tax refund when you submit your tax return. |
