Am I liable for a penalty that was a SARS error because not disputed within reasonable timeframe?
Posted 24 May 2013
I submitted a return for the first time myself in 2012. It was previously done by a colleague who was rather knowledgable. Each previous year (3 years) the outcome was a R0.00 balance as I do not have any medical aid, retirement, etc. Nothing had changed since then. She advised telephonically on how to submit and it was done.I have now received an sms last month (April 2013) stating that I am liable for R15k. Upon investigation with my HR department, they found that the income (IRP5 info) was du...

Tax on lump Sum pension Withdrawal
Posted 14 May 2013
I worked at a company and my portion of pension contribution was taxed as it was part of my basic salary(taxable income). I resigned from my company and received a lump sum payout where there entire R264k was taxed at 18%(excluding the first R22500). Will I get this tax back when I submit my tax return this year as I feel I have paid tax twice once on my contribution and again on my lump sum payout.

I am a provisional taxpayer... I work freelance and my income fluctuates. I've been doing my own tax through efiling for several years now, and have never had a problem. So this year, I send off my return on January 29 (yes, I know, leaving it till the last minute... every year I
promise I won't do that!!), and my assessment comes back, I'm owed R120.56. The amount is so small because I actually already did all the calculations in order to make my third provisional payment by the September deadline, so as not to incur any interest....

I am a pensioner and I have R1,000,000-00 on fixed deposit, how much tax will I have to pay? I am 65
Posted 4 April 2013
As a 65 year old you will entitled to your first R104 611 of taxable income to be tax free and a further R34 500 of interest.
So for example if your R1 000 000 attracts 10% p.a then the first R34 500 of the R100 000 interest will be tax free and the remaining R65 500 as it is below the tax threshold.

Can my mom claim if she pays for medical, but not tax registered?
Posted 21 February 2013
My mom is older than 65, she gets a pension of about R5500 monthly. She belongs to a medical aid that subtracts roughly 1850 a month. She is not registered for tax (I registered her on efiling, but SARS then removed her after we went to them. They said she dont need to be registered.). Seeing that she earns around R66 000 per year and the medical aid contributions are ± R22 000 yearly, and she has some out of pocket medical expenses as well, can she at all claim anything for the medical?
