Retirement Posts in Tax Q&A

What are the tax implications for shares that have been sold?

I am a pensioner over 65 and receive a pension from a living Annuity and a small income from interest (plus minus R5000 interest per annum). In March 2012 I sold shares that I received from Old Mutual and Sanlam many years ago. What are my tax implications and must I include this in my return?

Thanks

How to include sale of house and RA in the Statement of Local Assets and Liabilities

ITR12 Query: Statement of Local Assets and Liabilities
1. Form states that Local Assets should be listed at cost. Does this mean the cost of the asset when it was purchased? I bought my house in 1974 for R19 000. Is this the amount I enter in the fixed properties block?
2. Should the current values of Retirement Annuities be included as an asset?

How can SARS assess me as being R80,900 in arrears when I pay PAYE each month?

SARS sent me an SMS saying I have R80,900 in tax arrears. Although I'm registered as a provisional taxpayer, I also paid PAYE through my employer of R39,010.89, and then an additional payment of R44,000.00 three months ago (as am married in C.O.P. and my wife has an annuity income). Can you advise me how to go about finding out why they say I owe so much? I'm freaked out as I simply can't pay.

Provident Withdrawal Tax

I have a Provident fund with my Employer. They contribute 5% (which is tax deductible) and I contribute 5% (which is not tax deductible). My question is: when I resign and withdraw the funds, is the employee portion paid out tax free (as I already paid tax on it every month)? Or does it add to the withdrawal benefit scale (i.e. first R22,500 free, then 18%, etc.)

Dispute approved, but payment amount incorrect

Hi, I changed jobs and my pension fund was paid to me in a lump sum with tax deducted, but the liberty loaded irp5 incorrectly on e filing so it looked like I didn't pay tax on the amount. I only realised after I filed my tax return so phoned them, they cancelled the wrong certificate and loaded the correct IRP5 onto SARS. I then had to go dispute the matter with SARS. According to them I owed R9700. The dispute was allowed, and they said they owe me R13000, but they only paid me R3500 because t...

How does the rental tax on a first property, paid in cash, work?

I currently live with my parents, on their property. I am looking at purchasing an apartment for R650 000 and renting it out. I have been given the option of paying for this in cash and then paying my family back at their low bond rate of 6.5% (prime -2%).

The property will be rented out for R5500. The expenses on the property (rates and levys) are R1800. So the rental income would be R3700pm. This R3700 as well as another R4300 will be paid monthly to my parents (total R8000pm).

We both started working for the company after University. Personally I break even every month after medical aid contributions, student debt, rent etc. My co-worke...

Can I enter provident fund contributions under code 4001?

I was using your tax refund calculator I see that one can enter pension contributions (4001) but not provident fund contributions (4003). Why is this? I currently contribute towards a provident fund, what does this translate to tax wise?
