How much can I deduct for expenses from money I earned in Saudi Arabia?
Posted 16 November 2012
Hi, I taught a two-week course in Saudi Arabia, and they paid me straight into my bank account. Do I have to pay taxes on the full amount, or is there some fixed amount per day I can deduct for expenses?
Are there penalties on incorrect information?
Posted 8 November 2012
Hi, I mistakenly did not pick up my medical payments deducted from my salary as a 'tax perk' which therefore adds to my taxable amount. I now have to pay in more tax after I have already completed both provisional tax forms, only to discover this now when I must submit my ITR12 now in November. Are there penalties and interest involved, since the year end is Feb and it's now Nov already?

If I earn business income as a sole proprietor for services delivered as an electronic engineer, do I need to declare all my personal assets (bank balance, investments, motor vehicle, etc.) on the Statement of Assets, or only the assets that I mainly use for business (i.e. laptop computer)? I do not have a separate business bank account. Do fixed bank deposits fall under "Financial instruments" or "Cash in Bank" or does it not really matter? For investments such as unit trust...

Sole Proprietor, Importing and Tax?
Posted 10 October 2012
Hi Tim
Hope you can help me as I'm having a hard time finding the correct information.
I would like to start importing small quantities of goods, for resale, into South Africa as a Sole Proprietor. Now as far as I can tell I will need to complete the following forms at SARS to get an Importers Code: DA185 and DA 185.4A1.
Now the thing is I don't have a tax number etc because I've just finished my studies and I'm just starting out as a Sole Trader, and from the looks of it the DA185 form requires that information....

We are elderly people - not familiar with new things - can you help?
Posted 4 October 2012
I am too old to learn new things - I had a bookeeper lady - she has become too expensive. She does not show us what to do, just did it for us. We need to get help in a simple old fashioned manner = that is what we are looking for. I am a provisional taxpayer - a little closer to 70 years old - so don't hit me with hi tech answers. I do not understand the tax jargon.

Do I only pay tax for the months I am over the tax bracket?
Posted 17 September 2012
I am just starting out a part time photography business from home. My income isn't a set amount each month. Do I only pay tax the months I am over the tax bracket? And do I pay tax on my total income - or only the amount after I pay everything - such as medical aid, insurance, business costs etc.
Also, because this is my only source of income - do I only pay income tax or?

In filling in the irp6 form for provisional tax must the additional taxes incurred from late submission or under estimate for the second provisional tax payment be included in the form and if so where? Or does SARS tell you the additional taxes incurred when they send you your assessment for the year?

Started freelancing, not paying provisional tax. Can TaxTim help?
Posted 20 August 2012
I have being earning some money on the side as a freelancer during this last tax year and I went fulltime freelancing in a personal capacity at the end of 2011.
Will TaxTim be able to guide me with the expenses I can claim as part of operating as a freelancer? SARS is very strict on when certain expenses can be claimed. They seem to only allow expenses when salary is earned on a commission basis.

What is Provisional Tax?
Posted 6 January 2012
So as we are getting closer to Provisional Tax Season the question on taxpayer’s minds is, do I qualify as a provisional taxpayer? The Income Tax Act sets out specifics as to who qualifies and who doesn’t.
If you are a salaried employee then your employer will deduct a monthly amount and pay it over to SARS on your behalf. You will only have to file one tax return at the end of tax season.
Otherwise you may qualify as a provisional taxpayer and will have to submit a return twice a year...
