How much can I deduct for expenses from money I earned in Saudi Arabia?

How do the medical aid deductions for 2013 work - become dependent or become principle member?
Posted 12 November 2012
Hi Tax Tim, thank you for a very informative website, I've learnt a lot!
My question is this: which option is more tax beneficial?
My situation:
My wife and I are both principle members of the same medical aid, with a baby on the way. My understanding of the new tax credit rules for 2013 would imply that it doesn't really matter how we as a family structure our medical aid. Be it as 1 principle member and 2 dependents, or 2 principle members and 1 dependent. Is this correct? The new rules disregard the fact that I am in a higher tax bracket as well...

Are there penalties on incorrect information?
Posted 8 November 2012
Hi, I mistakenly did not pick up my medical payments deducted from my salary as a 'tax perk' which therefore adds to my taxable amount. I now have to pay in more tax after I have already completed both provisional tax forms, only to discover this now when I must submit my ITR12 now in November. Are there penalties and interest involved, since the year end is Feb and it's now Nov already?

Posted 6 November 2012
I don't see any fees paid by me as reflected on my return as per TaxTim for the HPCSA and other fees as related to my profession- oral hygiene (cpd point package as required by HPCSA and a dental association), I only work for commission and want to know if I can deduct other expenses such as cellphone and petrol ? It doesn't get asked on your TaxTim and I suppose it needs corresponding codes for your IRP5 return?

Retrenchment pay-out tax code
Posted 1 November 2012
During the 2012 tax year I received a retrenchment pay-out. It is reflected on my IRP5 with tax code 3907. According to the tax code definition I got off the SARS website 3907 is defined as: "Other lump sums (e.g. backdated salaries extended over previous tax years, not approved funds)."
Tax code 3901 is defined as: "Gratuities (retirement / retrenchment)."
Does it matter that the code seems to be incorrect on my IRP5, is there a tax implication?
