I was late in submitting my returns and a penalty notice was issued.

I was late in submitting my returns and a penalty notice was issued. I then (very quickly) finalised my returns which showed that SARS would owe me a refund. Does SARS deduct the penalty from my refund or do I have to pay the penalty first?
Does your provident fund contribution appear in my IRP5 or is there another term used?

I am a provisional taxpayer... I work freelance and my income fluctuates. I've been doing my own tax through efiling for several years now, and have never had a problem. So this year, I send off my return on January 29 (yes, I know, leaving it till the last minute... every year I
promise I won't do that!!), and my assessment comes back, I'm owed R120.56. The amount is so small because I actually already did all the calculations in order to make my third provisional payment by the September deadline, so as not to incur any interest....

His boss hasn't given him a raise in 3 years. I complained and after a lot of fighting and him wanting my husband gone...I think he was making an example out of him, he gave him a raise of...R200!!! It was supposed to go up with the new financial year since 2010, but nothing!
Is what his boss doing legal? He says he can't afford to pay more, but he just bought a h...

I receive a salary from Taiwan, but pay tax there. What do I do?

I have recently returned from overseas and I'm planning to stay in South Africa. I'm about to start teaching online for a Taiwanese company and will be taxed 18% in Taiwan if I make more than $893 with them (which I plan to do). I just want to know if I have to pay tax here in SA on that income. It seems a bit harsh to pay 18% and then another x% here at home. Is this going to be unavoidable? The amount in my bank account every month should be between R7 000 and R10 000. If I have to pay full taxes on that, I was thinking of keeping back about 25%, but I first want to find out whether there are any lenience I can get since I'm already taxed in Taiwan....

Why is tax collected and where is it collected, who is responsible for it?

Written by Marc

Tax is collected because the government needs to pay for all the services it provides the people of the country. It does that by charging people and business tax on the income that they earn each year. In South Africa the South African Revenue Services ("SARS") is responsible for collecting tax and gives it to the department of treasury who then pays for all the country's expenses and services. People and companies have to give a form to SARS showing how much income they earned and then pay over...

My office job pays PAYE and gives me an IRP5. The club pays me per an hour for work performed. How will this coaching income be taxed? I am a single parent trying to build a home for my family. The bond that I qualified for on my salary does not cover all expenses and I've had to pay for a lot of things out of my own pocket, such as R22 000 developers' fee for building on a plot, R17 500 getting electricity supplied to the plot, R15 000 getting sewerage connection to the plot, R5 500 for water to the plot. Can I claim for these expenses as a tax deduction?
SARS does not want to take an IRP5 into account for my business, what next?

Written by Marc

This was all for the 2008 tax year.
Income tax return was submitted on 28 / 02 /2009.
Assessment notice issued on 11 / 03 /2009.
Amount owing R147 666.
But an IRP5 was also issued for 2008, tax deducted: R241 340. That meant that SARS owed R93 674.
But the assessment was paid in full in December 2012.
That means that SARS still has not taken the IRP5 into account.
An objection was done on 31 / 03 / 2009 on eFiling. But SARS said that they do not have proof of this objection as at that time no objections could be done on eFiling....
