Tax obligations on monetary gift from foreign source?
Posted 22 October 2014
I am a UK Citizen and have had Temporary Residence in South Africa for a few of years. I work in South Africa, have a valid work permit and am married to a South African.
My parents in the UK (who are British Citizens) would like to put a gift into my UK Bank Account of just over R1,000,000. My UK bank account has sat dormant for years and I submit my SARS Tax Return with the details of my active South African Bank Account. Will I, or my parents, have any tax obligations in South Africa in relation to the gift? Also, am I required to reflect the gift on my next Income Tax Return in South Africa?...

The course the I am going to be studying costs R 35 000,00. The thing is I need to withdraw that amount and still keep about R 10 000,00 in the account in order to keep the account 'tradable'. As well as have some money on the side to help me get through the month for petrol and so on and so forth.

claiming rental expenses against bond (residential)
Posted 15 October 2014
Hello Tim,I came across this and would like some advice on whether or not it means I shouldn't claim rental expenses for the space I use for office purposes in my home. I'm still paying the bond towards the property and use one of the rooms as an office. (beware, if you own your home, do not write off a portion of your interest on your bond or rates, as you will lose your primary residence capital gains exemption of R2-million! When you sell your property one day, this would equate to ...

Help for a non-resident of South Africa fill in tax returns?
Posted 14 October 2014
I am a non-resident of South Africa because I have been living and working in the UK for the past 2.5 years. I had gotten some (bad!) advice from someone that said that I should continue to fill in my tax return because I have not officially emigrated. He said I should just fill in "0" for income and to state that I am unemployed. I went ahead and did this, but now SARS are asking for additional verification documents. I can still amend my return online. I realise now that I probably d...

Should you subtract VAT when calculating business expenses?
Posted 13 October 2014
I am a non-VAT registered, sole proprietor. When I deduct business expenses i.e. office equipment, phone costs etc. from my income to determine taxable income for the year, should I first subtract the 14% VAT portion of those expenses or am I allowed to "claim" the expense as-is?
For e.g. I buy an office desk for R2000.00 incl. VAT from a shop. Do I factor in R2000.00, or only R1754.39 as an expense?
