Do I pay tax on my SA salary if I am out of the country for most of the year?

I am going to work for a Tanzanian company for the next 12 months, but will still earn my SA salary. Is it business as usual in terms of PAYE on my SA salary, or is there some sort of relief?
Tax for one who has been some unemployed, some working overseas?
Posted 5 February 2014
Ok, so I was retrenched on March 27th 2013. I got a 2 month severance package. From 15th of April up to 30th August I was lucky to get consistent temp jobs. Then from September 1st to October 6th I was unemployed. I left RSA on Oct 7 to come work in Saudi Arabia. Therefore I was unemployed for 50 days and out of SA for 166 days consecutively. I will only be able to come home for 3 weeks between mid September and mid October. I do send about R35,000.00 per month home to pay bills and the bon...

Is my overseas earning exempt from tax?
Posted 23 January 2014
I was working in USA from October 2012 to May 2013 (without coming back home)
I paid Fed and State tax in USA over the period.
So for the 2013/2014 individual tax year.
I was out the country for more than 60 days in one go but not more than 183 in this particular tax year.
Questions are:
1. Are my earnings overseas exempt? or if not
2. Will I include the earnings and get a taxable deduction for foreign taxes paid?
Will I be taxed on my overseas earnings?
Posted 17 January 2014
I just have a question regarding foreign income. I am a South African resident for tax purposes, but I recently landed a job on a cruise ship overseas, which I will be starting in March 2014. I will be earning a foreign income which will be paid into my South African bank account. My contracts will be on a 4 months on, 2 months off basis, so I will be out of the country roughly 240 days a year, of which approximately 120 days will be consecutive. During my 2 months vacation I will not be earning a salary....

International Tax and Tax Treaties
Posted 15 January 2014
Dear Tax Tim
I earn international income as an individual (not a registered company ) on a monthly basis, what type tax will I be liable for in South Africa? Will I have to pay standard income tax in South Africa?
I earn this whilst in South Africa and not abroad as a monthly commission payout. How does tax treaties apply to foreign income or will this not be applicable to individuals?
Am I tax resident?
Posted 10 January 2014
Hi Tim,I was born in South Africa, however have been living out of the country for the last 7 years. (6 of which were spent in the UK). I have recently returned, but not on a permanent basis, as my main income comes from freelancing in the UK, and my partner is only here on a visitors visa. I have however been in the country for more than the 183 days this tax year. Will I need to pay SA tax on my UK income? I am still registered for UK tax, so I will be paying UK tax on that income as well.
Resident abroad aiming to cash out shares/ unit trusts, do I need to register with SARS ?
Posted 30 December 2013
I am a dual citizen (SA & European). I am currently living abroad on my European passport and never formally emigrated from SA. As a result I still hold a bank account there, as well as unit trusts & shares. I left SA shortly after studying so never had a job there/ paid income tax/ registered with SARS. Although I still visit the country on occasion, I am no longer a resident there. I would like to consolidate all my SA assets (have it all in one place) so I would like to "cash out...

What qualifies an SA citizen to be tax exempt in any country
Posted 3 December 2013
I'd like to set up a company offshore for the tax benefits. The company operations will take place in Ivory coast, Tanzania and Namibia. How can the employees of the company (mostly South Africans) be tax exempt because they will spend the entire period working outside the country - this will serve as an incentive to work outside of South Africa.

Dear TaxTimI worked 3 months (March - May 2012) of the 2013 financial year in South Africa (for which I have the IRP5, included in my efiling ITR12), the total amount earned was R24,850. Since then, from June 2012 to present, I have been employed on a full time basis and continuously present in Chile (the period exceeds the number of days required to qualify me as non-resident for tax purposes in SA - 183 days) - for all of the 2013 tax period, I have not paid tax on this income in Chile, due to...

Tax on income working permanently in the UAE and declaring of such.
Posted 23 September 2013
Hi Tim,
I left SA on 1/9/2011 to take up a permanent employment in UAE, with a UAE company. I also took up residency in the UAE. I sold all my fixed assets in SA, except for my primary residence, which I left for the children to complete their university studies from. I didn't have any intention to return to SA and wanted to relocate elsewhere, after my pension. Unfortunately I was retrenched w.e.f. 10/12/2012 and I returned to SA on 18/12/2012. I visited SA in Nov 2011 for 10 days in Oct 2012 for 5 days. I only started to earned an income in SA in February 2013....

CGT - Offshore Stock
Posted 11 September 2013
Tim
I have a question. I live in the UK. I have been living here for 5 years. I have property and bank accounts in South Africa. I submit my tax returns every year, claiming a loss on my bonds over my properties. I put my foreign income under section S10(1)(o).
I want to know about off shore investments, if I decide to buy US Stock today, will this be the base cost for CGT purposes or will it be the day I return permanently to South Africa?
How would this differ...

My Question: I have not registered for tax and I have been working outside RSA for the past 3 years, I was out of RSA for 190 days in 2012 and 160 days in 2011 - do I have to pay tax? I work for a UK company but get my fees in an RSA account.
Best regards
Hourly rate "net of tax". What does this mean?
Posted 26 August 2013
I am starting a new position with a multi-national US based company, and my letter of appointment lists my hourly rate as "net of tax". I am not sure what this means, and was hoping you would be able to shed some light. How are my tax implications affected? Do I need to register for provisional tax?
Never submitted a tax return - what kind of tax penalties are there?
Posted 15 August 2013
Hi Tim,
One of my family members has never submitted a tax return and only actually registered for tax about a year ago. He has been working for about 13 years. That being said, 4 of those 13 years he worked overseas (he worked on the cruise ships were he earned tips only), for 3 years he worked as a waiter where he earned cash and was paid a minimum wage and 5 years as a restaurant manager where tax was deducted from his monthly salary, however, he was never registered for tax by his employer or on an individual capacity. Like I said, he only registered and got a tax number last year (2012). ...
