Home office expenses

Written by Marc

I work from home - I have an office and photographic studio, so am trying to work out what I can claim as household expenses. We no longer owe money on our bond, so it seems like I can't claim anything there. I understand I can claim a portion of rates, water and electricity. Can I also claim a portion of the homeowners insurance and the security (armed response) costs?
How long should it take when an assessment is escalated?

I have submitted my tax return via SARS eFiling on the 2nd July 2015 but I am yet to receive my tax refund. Its been 3 months and additional documents submitted. My assessment was selected for the audit and they requested documents which I gave them. It was later escalated but nothing happened. It is currently escalated again and no feedback. What can a man do?
After audit is done and not calculations were changed by SARS how long before refund is done?

Good morning, my dad is 81 and his docs were requested for an audit which we uploaded via eFiling. We received notification that his tax has been finalized and no adjustments to the calculations were made. This was already in the middle of September. We have not had any further correspondence and the R824. 00 rand have not yet been refunded to him. Is there something I must do? Does these refunds take a long time to be paid over?
Are there issues with turnaround times and risk of SARS breaching them?

My tax return was singled out for verification. I submitted all supporting documentation on the 14th September 2015. I am now sitting on 23 working days and have heard nothing from SARS. Are there issues with their turnaround times this year and also, does the 30 days imply that my refund will also be issued within this timeframe?

Agent fees and tax declaration

If you receive income via an agent which has not been taxed, what is the income declared? Eg: I get paid R10 000 for a job. The agent takes R2000. Do I declare R10 000 or R8000 as income earned?
Also, what proof do I have to show this if audited?

Tax-deductable items

I have recently starting working from home as a free-lance food journalist. I had to purchase office and kitchen equipment to use to do my job. How do I claim these as expenses? Do I claim the full amounts (If the items cost less than R7000 each) under deductions/depreciation? Or must I use the calculator to work out the percentage and then deduct that amount each year?
Two medical aids

Written by Marc
Posted 14 October 2015
For the first four months of the tax year I belonged to a full medical aid deducted from my salary as part of cost to company. After that I was retrenched and joined a medical aid fund on my own. It is a hospital plan and not a full medical aid - does this still get filled in as a medical aid on the tax form (even though it is just a hospital plan)? If so, would I add the two amounts together to fill in as my medical aid deduction on the tax return or or they separate? - I know the work one has ...

Are overseas gifts from children classified as an income?

One of our children, who is working overseas, has recently being sending my wife and I (we are 63 years old) money each month to help with our expenses. Once this overseas money clears the Bank, this financial assistance works out approx. To R25,000 to R40,000 per month (in one instance, an amount was ALSO included for our grandson's annual school fee: R64,000 ) and this works out to approx. R364,000 per annum). We have indicated to the Bank that each of these amounts is being received as a gift...

Hi TaxTim,
I am a full-time student and work for a company during my free time where I do odd promotions in a month. I am earning below the tax bracket and I am being taxed 25%. I get taxed on jobs where I earn R350, R500, and R800. My question is should I be taxed even though I am way below the tax bracket? And how does it work with the tax if I do not have a tax number and the company have deducted tax but have not given pay slips yet? Can I be exempt from paying tax on a R350? What happ...

My medical aid is only deducted after PAYE. (i.e. Income - PAYE) = x less medical aid

Written by Marc
Posted 12 October 2015
My company insist that their calculations are correct. They only deduct my medical aid contribution after PAYE. As a result instead of my deduction being R10 000 to R11 000 odd I end up with at least R15000 plus deductions. Then they are adamant that when I do my tax returns I should get all that is due to me which is not true.

RAF conversion - might flag risk and SARS might want tax on it as they might think it is paid out

Written by Marc

I claimed RAF deductions of about R9000 last year but this year it is only R850 because I took an authorised premium payment holiday allowed by Sanlam. I also converted my RAF's to a new generation RAF platform, so they are were never paid out but I am very worried that SARS will think that the RAF's were paid out and want to tax them - what should I do?
